At the heart of Britain’s industrial revolution, and the flashpoint for a cultural revolution over 100 years later as the hub of a bustling music and art scene, Manchester is a city like no other.
The result of this rich history is a modern city of science and discovery; a cosmopolitan centre full of diversity, character and culture. Already home to the largest student population in the UK; people come from all over the world to study in Manchester, and the learning environment that has developed reflects this with a variety of facilities and amenities that make Manchester the perfect destination for today’s students.
Manchester’s social scene
The third largest city in England, Manchester is a fantastic place to live and study. A vibrant blend of old and new-world architecture gives the city a distinctive charm, while the tree-lined streets and leafy suburban parks help residents unwind from the hectic pace of the city.
The city also has a vibrant nightlife, with areas such as Deansgate Locks, Castlefield and Exchange Square offering a variety of pubs, bars and restaurants to satisfy every taste. Shoppers are also catered for in Manchester, with the enormous Arndale Centre in the heart of the city, and the colossal Trafford Centre just a short bus ride away to the west of the city.
Arts & Culture
There’s no shortage of cultural attractions in Manchester. The city has a number of leading art galleries, including The Whitworth Art Gallery, The Cornerhouse and the world-famous Lowry Centre in Salford.
Rich in Roman, as well as industrial and cultural history, the city’s many museums reflect its fascinating past, including The Museum of Science and Industry, The Imperial War Museum North and the Manchester Jewish Museum.
Centre for sport
Sports fans will also be attracted to Manchester, as it plays host to one of the world’s most famous and successful football teams – Manchester United. The club offers fascinating behind-the-scenes tours of its world-famous Old Trafford stadium and an award-winning museum. If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket you can even go to see Wayne Rooney & co play a Premier League match with the season running from August-May.
The city also plays host to one of the world’s most exciting up and coming teams, the newly super-wealthy Manchester City – so expect to see even more world superstars in Manchester over the coming years.
If cricket is your passion, the city has an international venue to keep you entertained. Old Trafford Cricket Ground, home of Lancashire County Cricket Club, hosts numerous First Class Country games, One Day International matches, Twenty20 games and even Test Matches.
Culinary delights
As well as high quality modern and European restaurants, the city of Manchester is also blessed with a large Chinese community and boasts the second largest Chinatown in the North West. There’s also a significant Asian and Caribbean community, so all our overseas students are catered for.
